From its beginnings Studio Pietrangeli has been involved in the design of large hydropower plants starting with the Rio Grande plant in Argentina (750 MW) in the late 1970s to mid-1980’s.

Since then, and especially in recent years, hydropower projects have become another of the firm's core activities. SP is currently responsible for the engineering of several large hydropower plants under construction.

These include:

• Gibe III (1870 MW),
• Gibe II (420 MW) and
• Beles (420 MW) in Ethiopia,
• Bumbuna (50 MW) in Sierra Leone,
• and the refurbishment of Uvini and Santu Miali hydropower plants in Italy.

The firm has recently been appointed by the Kurdistan Regional Government (Iraq) to perform feasibility studies for three medium-sized hydropower plants (Halwan, Gali Balinda, Delga).

It is also currently engaged in the Feasibility and Final Design of the Chespi 167 MW Hydropower Project in Ecuador.

Studio Pietrangeli is also currently working on the feasibility and design of numerous hydropower projects foreseen for construction both in Italy and abroad in countries such as Mexico, Ethiopia, Uganda, Sierra Leone and Nigeria.

The firm offers the entire range of engineering services required for hydropower plants.

Our staff includes experts in all the required fields (civil, mechanical, electrical engineering, financial expertise, etc.) with more than thirty years of international experience.

Recently the firm has become increasingly specialized in so-called “fast-track” projects requiring only four to five years from conception of the idea to operation of the plant.

The special techniques required for these “fast” designs include the use of the most up-to-date technologies such as satellite imagery, laser scanning, helicopter surveys, surface geotechnics, and the like, for investigation purposes, combined with the vast experience and the sound engineering judgement of the firm’s senior engineers.
